Tips for Children with Daytime Urinary Incontinence
Daytime wetting in children is a common issue. Around 3-4% of children between 3 and 12 years old experience daytime urine leakage regularly, but it can disappear with the right support.
- Encourage the child to go to the toilet regularly, even if they don’t feel the need.
- Plan regular toilet times and ensure the child empties their bladder completely.
- A urine diary can help track patterns and improve bladder control.
- Never punish the child for accidents – instead, encourage them and boost their self-confidence.
- Ensure the child drinks enough to maintain a good fluid balance and make toilet visits easier.
- A vibrating wristwatch can be a helpful tool to remind the child to use the toilet, especially when you're not there to remind them in person.
If Your Child Wet the Bed at Night
The medical term for bedwetting is nocturnal enuresis. Experts estimate that up to 160 million people worldwide suffer from bedwetting. Bedwetting can negatively impact families, but there are some tips on how to manage the problem. Here's a short list that might help:
- Bedwetting is not your child’s fault. Do not punish or tease the child.
- Let the child drink whatever they want. Swedish research shows it has little impact on bedwetting alarm treatments.
- Use Pjama when your child sleeps, both at home and away.
- For daytime wetting, use the Pjama Vibrating Alarm Watch.
- Download our DryGuardians app to use the calendar and record progress. This will also be useful when contacting a doctor.
- Talk about it! Many adults and children suffer from bedwetting, but no one talks about it.
